The gold rush started in 1849 when a person came out screaming, “There’s gold in the river!” The gold ran out in 1850. Before the gold ran out millions of people came rushing to look for gold. The miners were called 49ers, because they were gold seekers in the year 1849. The miners would get there from the east by boat through Panama, by boat going around South America, or following the California trail on land. The fastest and safest way was to go by land.

The miners from the east would leave their whole family to search for gold at the beginning but later women were invited. There were also people that quit farming to go to the gold rush so the remaining farmers had to work harder because more food was needed. However , although they had to work harder, they also got richer as everyone had to buy food from the farmers. In the beginning you could get rich but later you only found a lot of gold if you were lucky. After a while people got frustrated that they couldn’t find gold so they started playing poker. The miners had to look for gold 10 hours long and they barely found anything. I believe it was unwise to leave from the east to the west to look for gold. I think so because it was a long and dangerous journey and the people of California would already have taken all the gold so they would be too late anyway.
