In the 1840s only a few hundred people lived in San Francisco. When gold was found the population grew a lot. After gold was found thirty houses were build each day. A San Francisco land that cost $16 in 1847 was sold for $45,000. In 1850 gold that cost a half billion dollars was moving around San Francisco. Gold was like a magnet that brought people. San Francisco became a big city with theaters, operas, and more news papers than any city but London. Other lands were jealous of San Francisco. I think that gold is a real magnet that brings a lot of people. Now its not that way.
